Film defect or install defect? How to tell what went wrong

Sort it into buckets. Yellowing, haze, cracking and a top coat that stops healing point to the film. Edges that lift in the first weeks, bubbles, dirt under the film and knife marks in the paint point to the installation. Stretch marks can be either. Washing too soon is aftercare. Knowing which tells you who fixes it.

The film’s side

Some faults come from the material itself. No installer, however good, can cause them or fix them on the car.

The ARK warranty covers yellowing, cracking, blistering, peeling and delamination. Each of those is the film failing at its job.

  • A colour shift you can see in daylight.
  • Haze or loss of clarity across the whole panel.
  • Cracking in the top coat under normal use.
  • Blisters that appear after the film has cured.
  • A top coat that no longer closes light swirls with warmth.

The installer’s side

Most of what owners see in the first weeks is installation. It is about preparation, conditions and technique.

  • An edge that lifts early. Often a cold bay, a contaminated panel, or an edge left short instead of wrapped.
  • Specks or bubbles that stay. Dust or lint trapped under the film during the install.
  • A seam or a relief cut where you did not expect one.
  • A fine line cut into the clear coat. A blade used on the paint.

Stretch marks: the overlap

Film stretches to follow a curve. Stretched too far, it can whiten or distort. That can be the installer pulling the film beyond what the panel needs, or a film that marks under ordinary stretch.

Stretch marks and failing adhesive are two of the four problems ARK was engineered against. That is design intent, not a test result. The installer’s technique still matters, whichever film is on the car.

Aftercare’s side

Some damage comes after the car leaves the bay. Washing before the adhesive has cured, a pressure washer aimed at an edge, harsh chemicals, and brush washes all mark or lift film.

The ARK warranty does not cover impact, chips, stains, wash abrasion and accident. Those are the film doing its job, or damage from outside it.

Who fixes what

Installation faults go back to the shop that did the work. A good shop wants to know early and will look at it.

Film faults are a warranty claim. You contact the installing shop, the shop opens the claim with ARK, and ARK decides it. A covered claim pays for replacement film, and the labour to take off the failed film and fit the new one. See the claim path.

The honest limit

Some faults are honestly unclear

An edge that lifts months later could be adhesive, preparation or a pressure washer. This guide cannot decide that from a description. The person who looks at the panel decides, and a dated photo taken the day you notice it helps more than anything else.
